The reason I recommend a surface-tension-style gutter guard instead of a regular mesh style guard is due to the pesky needles and "build up" that occur on top of regular Home Depot-style gutter guards.

All in all, having a pro clean your gutters twice yearly will be the best route to keeping your gutters clean because of a few reasons:

The professional will do an impromptu roof inspection. (Often Included) 
The professional will clean the debris off of your roof if any has built up. (Often Included) 
The professional will provide a clear critical eye close to the edge of your roof and gutters. 

					

If you have guards in place, these inspections tend to fall by the wayside because of the "Well, I have something taking care of that" notion -- ie, gutter guards.
